How To Write A Literature Review Effectively

Posted by Parul Nath in Literature Review

The literature review format may be different for different universities across the world. It may also depend on the subject on which you are working. The purpose of a literature review is to critically analyze a part of a published body of knowledge by doing a comparison of previous research studies on the same subject, reading the summary of the same, etc. Here is how to write a literature review effectively.

Write the introduction

Identify the area of concern, thus providing a context in general for the literature review. Point out what the overall trends are along with the gaps in the scholarship or the research or a problem from a single perspective. Establish as to why you have reviewed the literature, explain the criteria used in comparing and analyzing the literature along with the organization of the review and also state why certain literature has not been included.

Write the body

All types of literature, including group studies, case studies, theoretical articles, reviews, etc. as per the common denominators such as quantitative versus qualitative approaches, specific objective or purpose, chronology, etc. should be included in the body. Summarize individual articles or studies with as little or as much detail as possible with its comparative importance in the literature and remember that length denotes importance. Give the reader strong sentences as well as paragraphs and summary sentences in order to aid in understanding the analyses and comparisons.

Write the conclusion

Summarize the articles and the major contributions to research studies to the body of knowledge under your literature review. Point out the flaws in research as well as gaps in the methodology. Provide some insight into what the relationship between the central topic of literature review and a larger discipline and provide a conclusion using this relationship. You can thus present a literature review effectively.
